Keynote Speaker: Hakeem Oluseyi

Dr. Hakeem M. Oluseyi is an internationally recognized astrophysicist, science TV personality, and global science education activist. His research interests span astrophysics, cosmology, technology development, and STEM education. He is currently a Clarence J Robinson Professor at George Mason University and President-Elect of the National Society of Black Physicists. He received a BS degree in Physics and Mathematics from Tougaloo College, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Stanford University. He has authored over 100 scholarly publications and nine books, holds 7 U.S. patents and 5 international patents, and has supervised 12 completed PhD degrees and 34 completed MS degrees.

Dr. Oluseyi is passionate about communicating the scientific process and the results of modern science to students and the public. He has hosted and contributed to 17 television series, 11 television specials, five full length films, and regularly appears on national and international news networks including Netflix, PBS, Discovery, NatGeo, and more. Dr. Oluseyi has won several awards for his science communication activities including the 2018 Communications Award from the National Space Club and four Webby Awards. He has also received an Emmy nomination, a Grammy nomination, and a Pulitzer nomination. He is the author of a newly released memoir A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars.

Dr. Oluseyi grew up in some of the roughest neighborhoods in the country. As a result, he spent a lot of time inside, reading encyclopedias and watching PBS nature shows. At a young age, he discovered a love of science and space that was inspired by his role model, Albert Einstein. Throughout his childhood and into young adulthood, he was repeatedly faced with circumstances that would make most people give up—a lack of supervision at home, attending his state’s lowest rated school, falling in with the wrong crowd, and failing physics exams when he ultimately made his way to Stanford. But Hakeem never gave up.

Today, as a world-renowned astrophysicist and the former Space Science Education Lead at NASA and Chief Science Officer for Discovery, Hakeem inspires audiences around the world to chase impossible dreams, fight for what they want, refuse to listen to naysayers, and reach out and lend a hand up to those around them. Hilarious, honest, and inspiring, Hakeem wows audiences with a look at his mind-bending scientific research while motivating them with his personal life story.

  • Will the virtual learning sessions be live or pre-recorded?

There will be a mix of live-streamed and pre-recorded sessions available. If there is not a live-streamed session that fits your professional development needs, you are welcome to select a pre-recorded session that better aligns to your individual goals. As long as the pre-recorded session is viewed during the conference hours, it will count toward your PDP or TASL hours.

At this time, we have applied for TASL credit and will update here when confirmed. We are unable to provide credit for sessions viewed on-demand after the conference.

  • Do I need to pre-register for sessions?

No, you do not need to pre-register for live or virtual sessions.

  • Will sessions be available online after the conference?

Yes, sessions and materials will be available through our online conference provider for 30 days after the event. After this time, you will have to reach out to the session presenter.

Information for vendors, sponsors, and exhibitors will be available soon.

This event has been approved for 6 hours of  TASL credit.

We are unable to provide credit for sessions viewed on-demand after the conference.

  • Can I buy a ticket for just one day?

Due to the hybrid nature of the event, one day tickets are not available. This may be possible on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us at tsin@battelle.org and we would be happy to discuss this scenario with you.
