Code.org Computer Science Workshops

Expanding equitable access to computer science education.

 TSIN serves as the regional partner in Tennessee for Code.org's Professional Learning Programs. The Code.org professional development program supports efforts to expand equitable access to computer science in K-12 schools through a one-year professional development program for teachers. Code.org has programs for all grade levels. All Code.org professional development opportunities require no prior knowledge.

CS Fundamentals (Grades K-5)
The CS Fundamentals program is a one-day workshop held throughout the year, currently online (due to COVID restrictions). Participants will learn about computational thinking, as well as online and "unplugged" non-computer activities for the classroom. These workshops are first come, first served.  

For educators who have already participated in an introductory CS Fundamentals workshop, a one-day Deep Dive workshop will be available in 2020-2021. These workshops are first come, first served. 

Shared practices align to the Tennessee K-8 Computer Science Standards.

CS Discoveries (Grades 6-10)
The CS Discoveries program is cohort-based program with a 5-day local summer workshop and 4 quarterly workshops during the academic year. CS Discoveries is an introductory course for middle and early high school students that exposes students to computer science. Participants must apply for this one-year, no-cost program, and participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and cost. Educators who complete the CS Discoveries program will qualify for the Computer Science Employment Standard.

Shared practices align to the Tennessee K-8 Computer Science Standards.

CS Principles (Grades 9-12)
The CS Principles program is cohort-based program with a 5-day local summer workshop and 4 quarterly workshops during the academic year. CS Principles is designed to prepare students who are new to computer science for the AP CS Principles exam, but may also be taught as a non-AP course. Participants must apply for this one-year, no-cost program, and participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and cost. Educators who complete the CS Principles program will qualify for the Computer Science Employment Standard.

CS Fundamentals Participant Requirements:
The participant must be a K-5 grades educator in Tennessee. CS Fundamentals workshops are on a first come, first served basis and are currently held online due to COVID restrictions. CS Fundamentals participants may register for a workshop without an application. Those wishing to participate in the CS Fundamentals Deep Dive workshop must be at K-5 educator who has already completed a CS Fundamentals introductory workshop.

Applications for the 2021-2022 CS Discoveries and CS Principles cohorts are now open. Applications typically open mid-winter and close in early spring.

How often do CS Discoveries and CS Principles meet for workshops?

CS Discoveries and Principles cohorts will attend a 5-day workshop in the summer and have 4 quarterly workshops in the academic year.

Is there a cost to participate in Code.org workshops?

Code.org workshops are offered at no cost to participants. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs.
