Engineers transform the world all the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions and work with teams of knowledgeable, inspiring people to invent, design, and create results that matter.
As we imagine tomorrow, engineers will be at the heart of solutions to combat climate change, secure cyberspace, develop vaccines, and make the world a better place for all of us.

Today you will learn more about the engineering design process and design a lander that will keep a ball safe and secure when dropped from 1 foot or higher.

Step 1: Watch this video to gain a better understanding about the steps of the engineering design process and why we use it.

Step 2: Listen to this engineering song and this hip hop version.

Step 3: Watch the “Safe Landing” DiscoverE challenge video here. How can you ensure a safe landing when you drop a cup holding a ball?

Step 4: Start brainstorming ideas and collecting materials, then build and test your design. Learn about how parachutes work here.

Step 5: Ask your parents to share a picture of your lander on social media using #MakerMondayTN and #LearningInPlaceTN!

Engineering schools are looking to enroll a more diverse student population - particularly girls and underrepresented minority groups. Diverse teams are stronger, better, and more effective at solving the kinds of complex problems engineers tackle. A team of engineers with varied points of view, life experiences, and skill sets will get to the best solution faster.

Today you will explore the need for diversity in STEM career fields.

Step 1: Listen to Renee’s take on being a female engineering student here

Step 2: Explore the EngineerGirl website to see exciting opportunities for girls in engineering.

Step 3: Learn about Maurice Ball’s experience as a minority in an engineering degree program here.

Step 4: Listen to the story “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly. Consider how these women made a difference.

Step 5: Ask a family member to share what your learned about diversity in STEM on social media using #WonderWednesdayTN and #LearningInPlaceTN!
