Exploring Animals

Exploring Animals

Maker Monday

May is the month of kindness and this week is "Be Kind to Animals" week! How can you show kindness to animals?  Think about how you take care of the pets in your home and what you pets require to be happy and healthy. If you don't have a pet at home, think about a pet you might like to own.

Today you will examine different types of pets and make a plan about how to take care of them.

Step 1: Today you will create a step-by-step plan to care for a pet. Watch this video about how to Be Kind to Animals to help you brainstorm ways to take care of your favorite friend. Make a list of all the ways you could take care of a pet.

Step 2:  Check out these animal care sheets on different pets. These sheets are made to help adults understand caring for a pet. How can you make an animal care sheet that is student friendly?

Step 3:  Think of pictures you can draw to help your reader understand the care your animal will need. Check out these books on taking care of your cat or dog to understand how images help the reader understand your writing.

Step 4:  Now that you have researched and brainstormed all the ways to take care of your pet. It's time to make your animal care sheet for your pet. Consider these questions when creating your care sheets. Be sure to use pictures, titles, and captions to help your reader.

Step 5: Be sure to share your animal care sheet for your pet on social media using #MakerMondayTN and #LearningInPlaceTN!

Wonder Wednesday

Showing kindness to our animals that live in your home is important, but how can we show kindness to animals that live in the wild? While some animals are in abundance, others have fewer numbers every year.  Some animals are even endangered which means we have to take action before they become extinct!

Today you will investigate endangered animals and wonder about how to best protect them.

Step 1:  What does it mean to be endangered? Watch this video to learn about what it means to be an endangered animal. This video illustrates how endangered animals compare to other endangered animals.

Step 2: Learn about the Endangered Species Act here and in this video and how it protects animals. Search the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species database to find endangered animals in your state.

Step 3: Play Animal Trivia games on the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) website to test your animal knowledge and earn badges. Then explore this list of endangered species across the world to learn about each animal.

Step 4: How else can we show kindness to wild animals? One way is to build bridges to provide safe passage. Check out 10 animal bridges around the world here and watch footage of wildlife using an animal bridge in Utah to learn how humans are engineering safe places for animal crossings.

Step 5: Ask a family member to share what you learned about endangered animals on social media using #WonderWednesdayTN and #LearningInPlaceTN!

Future Friday

As you have learned earlier in the week, there are numerous ways to be involved in the care of and protection of animals. Careers aren't limited to your local veterinarian. You could work at a local animal shelter, at a zoo, or with wildlife conservation organizations. You are only limited by your imagination!

Today you will explore careers related to the care of and protection of animals.

Step 1: Veterinarians provide treatment for animals that is similar to what a physician provides for humans. Learn more about being a veterinarian here.  Check out books called “I Want To Be A Veterinarian” and “Hooray for Veterinarians”.

Step 2: An animal shelter worker helps to take care of animals during their time at the shelter.  Check out more about what shelter workers do here.  Check out this news video about children helping at an animal shelter.

Step 3: Have you ever wondered who takes care of all the animals at the zoo? Check out more about the a day in the life of a zoo keeper here and here. Check out this here to learn more.

Step 4: If you have a love of wildlife, then a Wildlife Conservationist, like Dr. Jane Goodall, may be the career for you. Learn more about here.  She spent her life working with chimpanzees and you can learn more about her life’s work here.

Step 5: Ask a family member to share something you learned about one of the careers and why you might be interested in that career field using #FutureFridayTN and #LearningInPlaceTN!
